Punta de Mita
This area, has a beautiful beach of fine and golden sand, with transparent warm waters, penetrating the magnificent underwater world of reefs where you can observe the marine fauna composed of different species. It is an ideal spot to practice fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, excursions to the Marietas Islands as well as bird-watching, and between the months of November and March the observation of the humpback whales. Punta de Mita was the destination of annual pilgrimages of ancient Huichol tribes for planting ceremonies.
In this zone the "Grand Project" that bears the name Punta de Mita is developing, embracing other beaches of singular beauty from Piedra Blanca, Emiliano Zapata, Destiladeras, el Anclote up to the Corral del Risco. Included and integrated in the development of this project are first class hotels, golf course, restaurants and highest class residential developments.
Punta de Mita forms part of the municipality of Banderas Bay and is located just on the northern tip of the bay, approximately some 40 minutes from the airport of Puerto Vallarta. The tour by car is something worthwhile to do, always taking into consideration that the highway beginning from La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a narrow, two lane street, surrounded by lush vegetation and with a considerable number of curves. Amongst other points, arriving at the beach of "Destiladeras", the view is impressive.
It hasn't taken long for this breathtaking mini-peninsula to attract international investors after the solid establishment of the Four Seasons Resort Punta de Mita. Innumerable investment options include condos, villas, golf-course homes, seaside resorts and even a Deepak Chopra Center. When Jack Nicklaus designed the course for the Four Seasons Resort at Punta de Mita, he did something unique. He used a small island, about 175 yards offshore, for one of the greens. It is surrounded by what has to be the biggest water hazard in the world, the Pacific Ocean, and is the only natural island green in the world. This semi- private course, intended for the hotel guests of the Four Seasons Resort and golf club members, is not played as heavily as most public courses. You are allowed to play if not a member.
Nationally recognized for the attention and care of the environment, Punta de Mita is one of the bright stars in the firmament. The town of Anclote near the point is under process of major reconditioning of the streets, lights and other infrastructure.
Islas Marietas
The Islas Marietas (Marieta Islands) are located in Banderas Bay right off the point of Punta de Mita. Home of the endangered Blue-Footed Booby and other aviary species, these islands are a national ecological sanctuary well-known for the off-shore reefs that provide wonderful snorkeling and undersea diving with colorful marine life including the giant manta ray. The islands are also a great place for fishing with a small private cove accessible only during the lower tides. Boats are available for rental in Anclote and other areas with anchorage off the coast.
Litibu
Litibú received national attention when President Vicente Fox visited the area, located just north of the entrance to Punta de Mita, south of the rocky promontory that borders Sayulita. The original investment of $50 million USD went toward the basic infrastructure including a four-lane highway, drainage and lighting. As the project continues, plans include major resorts, boutique hotels, a marina, heli-pad, hospitals, shopping centers, a world-class golf course and more. With the access highway to Sayulita, this region is already well underway to the development which will include eight major hotel chains within the next few years.
